Summer Art in Cotuit

Educate, Entertain, Illuminate, Inspire. The Cotuit Center for the Arts strives to do all of this by offering a variety of year-round performances, exhibitions, workshops and community events.

In the quaint town of Cotuit, nestled between Falmouth and Hyannis, lies one of the Cape’s finest centers of art, distinguishing Cape Cod from other summer destinations.

The colorful history of the Cotuit Center for the Arts began in 1993, when it was founded in a humble 1200 square foot mechanic’s garage located behind the local market, the Cotuit Village Coop.

The garage tragically burned down in April 2000, but thanks to donations from the community, it relocated to its current, two-acre site on Route 28.

The Center boasts two theaters – the main theater, which seats 175, and the Little Black Box Theater, which hosts experimental performances and seats 25.

Tickets range from $10 for daytime performances, geared towards children, and $12 for plays in the Little Black Box Theater, to between $18 and $25 for featured evening plays.

“Cotuit Center for the Arts has an excellent history of producing and presenting innovative, quality works that encourage individual artistic development and exploration. The Center also strives to increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the creative process by facilitating communication among artists and between artists and the public.”

The theater experience is unique in that the actors, crew, and stagehands are members of the community, who rehearse for six weeks before taking stage for another four. Auditions for this summer’s featured production of the musical extravaganza, Gypsy, begin April 26, and the show will kick off July 7.

In addition to Gypsy, this summer will feature:

The Beauty Queen of Leenane, June 11 – 28

What the World Needs Now, June 11 -14

Art, July 16 – August 2

The Fat Ass Cancer Bitch Turns 49, July 31 – August 29

A Couple of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking, August 13 – 30

The Center will also be hosting a variety of fun events this summer:

Wine and Music Wednesday – an open house held on the third Wednesday of every month, with wine tasting and live music. La Mer Concierge is excited to be hosting the August 19th open house.

Nancy Witter: Hot Flash Laughs, July 21 – Comedian Nancy Witter will present stand up comedy for Ladies Night.

Brazen Belles Burlesque, August 12 – 15 – The Cape Cod based burlesque troupe returns to the Center for lively performances featuring singing, dancing, and acting.

Concerts:

The Center is host to as many concerts each year as the campus’ schedule allows.  Local, regional and international artists perform on the Center’s main stage, art gallery and art studio.  In addition to single event concerts, regular series such as the Trespass Music Mondays Series, 3rd Fret Coffeehouse Concerts and  the Kami Lyle Sit-A-While are ongoing throughout the year.  The Center is also a proud host to the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival and the Provincetown Jazz Festival.  For a complete list of music events – click here.

Classes:

Classes and workshops at the Center are presented in a warm and inviting place in which all members of the community are invited to explore creativity, socialize with others and try something new.  We offer classes under the supervision of skilled and credentialed teachers in the visual arts, music, theater, film and writing.  We strive to offer classes for people of all ages and abilities.  For a list of available classes – click here.

The Gallery:

Cotuit Center for the Arts houses one of the most beautiful exhibition spaces on Cape Cod.  The gallery is comprised of two levels, extending into the theater space on the upper level.  The exhibits on display rotate approximately every 4-6 weeks.  Most often there are 3 separate shows sharing the gallery space and including 3-dimensional work such as sculpture and pottery.  Each year the Center features an exhibit dedicated to members of Cotuit Center for the Arts.

Membership information can be found here.

La Mer Concierge will be posting updates throughout the season about upcoming events here on our blog. You can also visit cotuitcenterforthearts.org to see a full calendar of upcoming events, purchase tickets, and learn more about classes.

We hope you include the arts as part of your summer fun – with theatre productions, concerts, art exhibitions, drawing, painting, dancing and yoga classes, all available at this dynamic venue in Cotuit, there is something for everyone.
