Everyone knows that Cape Cod is a great place to spend the summer, but when the off-season comes around, there is much more to the Cape than shuttered homes and quiet beaches. Life is as vibrant as ever during the holidays. Here at La Mer Concierge we are busy taking care of our clients’ homes, but that doesn’t mean we don’t like to have fun too. We’ve compiled a list of suggestions for spending your holidays in Cape Cod. From classic Christmas performances to showcases of local arts and crafts, every traveler or resident alike will find something to enjoy.

The Polar Express Train by the Cape Cod Central Railroad: Now until December 23

This childhood favorite book by Chris Van Allsburg is brought to life in this one-hour experience. Riders are encouraged to wear their pajamas just like in the book. Enjoy hot chocolate and a visit from Santa upon arrival at the North Pole. Tickets start at $49 for adults, $39 for children.

Gardens Aglow Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays November 25 – December 18, 2016

Gardens Aglow transforms the Heritage into a winter wonderland with more than ten miles of lights. Adult tickets are $18 with discounts for children, youth and Heritage members. Special features this season include:

  • On December 2-4, cuddle with baby goats, piglets, chickens and chicks, bunnies, and other barnyard babies.
  • The “Heritage Holiday Express” features a two level model trains display.
  • Get décor ideas from designer-created holiday tablescapes. Designers include Irina MacPhee from Pastiche Cape Cod, Olive Chase of The Casual Gourmet, and Richard McLaughlin of Fresh Interiors.
  • On Saturdays, see ice sculptures created, and pose for photos with them.

Cotuit Center for the Arts Holiday Performances

Join the Cotuit Center for the Arts for a classic holiday favorite, “Scrooge”, or the more irreverent “Butter Ball”. This latter Thanksgiving comedy “takes the dysfunctional family holiday to a whole new level of absurdity.”

Scrooge – Cotuit Center for the Arts – November 22-December 18

Butter Ball – Cotuit Center for the Arts – December 1-18

Annual Holiday Arts & Crafts Fair – Saturday, December 3

Also at the Cotuit Center for the Arts, the Annual Holiday Arts & Crafts Fair showcases work from local artisans including photography, jewelry, clothing, hand woven items, greeting cards, and home furnishings.

Osterville Village Stroll – Friday, December 9

New England charm is unmatched in Osterville on this special night, complete with horse-drawn carriage and trolley rides. Enjoy the traditionally decorated village with a cup of cocoa in your hand and carolers singing Christmas tunes.

First Night Celebrations – Ring in the New Year

Several Cape Cod towns will be ringing in the New Year in their own, unique way. Three of our favorites include Sandwich, Chatham and Provincetown. Each community will present a variety of performances and activities for all ages including parades and fireworks and a Polar Bear Plunge in Provincetown. Check each organization’s website for a full schedule of events. Grab a room at a charming inn and make a weekend of it.
